Body Hate Apocalypse 2012 →
Our partners at Beauty Redefined have put together an amazing list of 15 goals to help make 2012 your happiest, healthiest, most positive year yet. We particularly like these media-oriented resolutions but the whole list is great:
Put your $ where your mouth is: Make a goal to only shop at stores that treat [women] respectfully in their advertising and products. Speaking up with your pocketbook...

Lego: stop selling out girls! #LiberateLego →
In 1981, LEGO’s campaign, “What it is, is beautiful,” invited girls to play with LEGOs in a way that didn’t appeal to this lowest common denominator version of girlhood, but gave girls credit for being creative, smart, and imaginative. This has always been LEGO’s strength. It’s why they are parents’ go-to toy. They’ve never sold our kids out—until now. As parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents,...

I mostly agree. I think there is a larger retail industry problem (e.g. that there are “girls” vs. “boys” aisles) which Lego is exploiting. But, if Lego is stuck in the “boys” aisle, how else will it get out? Push Walmart for a “nongendered” aisle?
This is definitely a toy industry problem. As for creating...

We own some “girly” Lego blocks (Lego Belville, and also Lego-compatible Hello Kitty blocks from Megabloks). They’re only girly if you insist on playing with ‘em that way. Same will be true here, no?
That’s awesome that you mix them!

“It’s Okay to be Neither,” By Melissa Bollow Tempel
Alie arrived at our 1st-grade classroom wearing a sweatshirt with a hood. I asked her to take off her hood, and she refused. I thought she was just being difficult and ignored it. After breakfast we got in line for art, and I noticed that she still had not removed her hood. When we arrived at the art room, I said:...

Becoming a Pop Culture Pirate pt 1: Music Remixing →
This week SPARK is running a two-part miniseries about media remix and resistance. We were inspired by the work of Elisa Kreisinger, The Pop Culture Pirate, when she came to speak at our activist retreat this past October, so we named this series in her honor. Check it out!

Girls are no worse than boys at maths: Study in 86... →
“This is not a matter of biology: None of our findings suggest that an innate biological difference between the sexes is the primary reason for a gender gap in math performance at any level. Rather, these major international studies strongly suggest that the maths gender gap, where it occurs, is due to cultural factors that differ among countries - and that these factors can be...

17-Year-Old Girl Creates Nanoparticle That Kills... →
When I was seventeen, it was a very good year. Actually, that’s a flat out lie. When I was seventeen I was probably wallowing in self-important despair so trivial that now, years later, I can’t even remember if I was wallowing or not. The point I’m getting at here is that I wasn’t doing anything productive, much less anything that could save countless lives and contribute to a field of science...

ragdublin:
The GDDD were an organization of women in Italy from 1943-45. They were the largest group of active anti fascist women at the time. At their height they had around 70,000 members and comprised of women from every walk of life, from previously unpoliticised housewives to lifelong radical activists. Some of the work they did included organizing strikes, armed resistance, setting up...

SPARKteam blogger Stephanie wrote something just for you:
I am not going to dwell on the nature of the question, except to say that asking about sexism against men is akin to asking about racism against white people. But that fact doesn’t mean that men can’t suffer under our current gender construction. In fact, the same media and cultural constructions that limit the roles offered to women and...
